I’ve been greatly blessed to have able to make a living from music, as a musician, producer, engineer and now, as a teacher at Vanguard University. As I sit and listen to my students aspirations it often saddens me that the music industry has changed so much, some for the better but many for the worse.
With affordable software and hardware, everyone now has the opportunity to record music. That is good. But, not everyone should be recording music. The men and women who have dedicated some much of their lives to ‘creating’ are losing out because studios can’t make ends meet. Fewer and fewer people are booking studio time.
I’m hear to tell you, that the ‘vibe’ and creative spirit that is needed to produce great music can’t be found in your bedroom, livingroom or garage. You MUST have a great sounding studio space, with a comfy, creative field and engineers who are just as important and gifted as the musicians.
This morning I came across “S.O.S. (Save Our Studio) A Benefit Album“. As a disclosure I have no vested interest in The Compound, financial or otherwise. In fact, I’ve never even worked there. But, I do have friend who have and the music coming forth from The Compound is extraordinary.
There are too many great studios disappearing and if I can do anything to help save any of them, I’ll do it. So, here’s the pitch:
A battle cry, and these warriors stepped forward. Like so many studios The Compound has been digging deep into debt for a few years now and we had considered closing the doors for good. Until word got around and we brainstormed the idea of creating a compilation record to raise funds and raise awareness. The response has been overwhelming, leaving us truly humbled.
The outpouring of love and generosity has been like a wave of sonic rain drenching us with a new faith in our community and ourselves. Our thanks to everyone involved in taking this project from seed to structure (a pdf booklet is included with download for credit-where-credit-is-due).
We are offering this double-disc-full of tracks at a minimum price of $11.99. As this is a benefit record you are welcome to donate more if you are able, every little bit helps.
Live Out Loud,
Antoine
