Wedding Photography Shot List

For many people, photography is one of the most important elements for any wedding. The bride and groom will generally be so busy during the wedding day, that you want to be able to look back and re-live the moments at a later stage, as well as share these moments with friends and family. For that reason, capturing the key moments of the day is absolutely crucial.

Most professional photographers will have their own list of important shots that they develop over time (even if that list is in their head and isn’t written down), but they should always be willing to add any special requests to their list. [read]

How to Save Your Energy for Things That Matter

Albert Einstein, one of the greatest minds to ever live, chose purposefully not to even memorize his own telephone number. He obviously had enough brain capacity to memorize a short series of numbers, but still, he chose not to. He viewed memorizing these digits as a waste of precious life energy.

Instead, he used this energy to memorize more important things, which lead to revolutionary accomplishments in the field of Physics.

The same principles of energy that Einstein acknowledged, apply to us. It is easiest to see the effects of this energy in extreme situations. If we are deprived of food for too long, our bodies won’t have enough energy left to perform physical tasks. If we don’t sleep for two days straight, we won’t have enough energy to partake in a meaningful conversation. Not eating, or not sleeping will drain us of our energy reserves. We all understand this because it’s common sense. [read]

E-readers killing paper books as iPad rules media tablets

Once considered niche products and dismissed as a passing fad, tablet devices lead by the omnipresent iPad and dedicated e-book readers such as Amazon’s widely popular Kindle are affecting traditional book publishing, says a survey by research firm ISH iSupply.

Book revenue for US publishers, including both e-books and paper books, will decrease at a compound annual growth rate of three percent from 2010 to 2014. This marks a shift from the previous period of 2005 to 2010, when revenue grew slightly. Total book revenues will fall to $22.7 billion in 2014, down from $25 billion in 2010.

The decline in paper book printing, distribution and sales will be “frightening” for print die-hards, says iSuppli analyst Steve Mather. He compared this disruption to a similar turmoil the music and movie businesses had gone through amid the rise of digital content stores such as iTunes and Amazon. At the epicenter of this change is, once again, Apple… [read]

Emotional Marketing

Teresa owns a veterinarian practice. She’s been in business for nearly 30 years (about as long as E-Myth!), and she still loves every minute of it. Lately however, business has been slow so Teresa reached out to a local marketing consultant for some help.

One of the things the consultant suggested was that she attract new clients by using coupons and discounts. Teresa approached me with some concerns about that approach. She’d worked hard to establish her practice as a high-end, high-quality care facility and she charged accordingly. She worried that offering discounts would attract a “less than ideal clientele.” At the same time, she wondered if the word of mouth marketing she’d always relied on was simply not as valuable as it was when she first began her practice some 30 years ago. George Massenburg Demonstrates His Parametric Equalizer

Here’s a great video of audio and recording great George Massenburg demonstrating his famous GML8200 parametric equalizer. The 8200 is revered for its lack of color and clean transparent sound and that’s certainly in evidence here.

It may not be obvious in the video exactly what George is doing so let me outline a couple of EQ methods that he’s touching on.

Photography Class: Lenses

Different types of cameras make use of lenses designed for their specific lens mounts and formats.  Here, we’ll limit our discussion to the lenses most often used with DSLR cameras.  DSLRs give you the opportunity to use a variety of lenses to suit your needs.  Here are a few basics on what’s available and what you should be familiar with:

Focus: Most of the lenses currently available for DSLRs work with the camera system to provide automatic focus. Sophisticated camera/lens combinations can automatically select the best area of an image to focus on, based on programmed algorithms and even face detection.  Predictive focus is available for moving subjects and digital or mechanical stabilization mechanisms help prevent or minimize blur caused by camera movement.  More controlled, single-point autofocus, as well as manual focus is also standard. 10 Tips to Improve Your Food Photography Styling

While portrait photographers need to be skilled in the art of getting their subjects to relax in front of the camera to get a great shot, we food photographers have things a little easier. At least our subjects (mostly) can’t talk.

How-To: Getting the Right Exposure [photography]

One of the most important issues you should address before shooting a picture is setting the exposure. First of all, a good exposure is one that captures the overall tonal range (the range of dark through light tones) that is visible to you before you click the shutter. What you’re trying to do is to capture an image that shows light tones, dark tones and everything in between. When you create a good exposure, it means that you’re giving your camera’s sensor the right amount of light to record your subject’s tones correctly. [read]

Proximity in Design: Why I Can’t Use My Car’s A/C

I’m always fumbling with the A/C controls in my car. My daily commute is in hot, sunny Southern California, home of the courteous freeway driver. I can’t afford to take my eyes off the road for too long to find the control I’m looking for. Half of the time when I’m trying to adjust the temperature, I end up blowing my beard off because I’ve spun the wrong dial. If my wife’s in the car with me, I usually resort to asking her to do it for me.

There’s a simple design principle that, had it been given greater attention, could have made this needlessly confusing interface much easier to use: proximity. [read]
