How to Be More Decisive

Do you struggle to make decisions? Do you sometimes find yourself dithering for ages, weighing up multiple options, or trying to second-guess what other people might want you to do? If so, you’re definitely not alone. Many people have trouble being decisive – but it’s an important trait to have, both in life and in business.

Is it possible to become more decisive? Well, maybe, er, possibly, it could be … ;-) Actually, yes, yes it definitely is. Here’s how:

Honor Your Feelings and Preferences
In your life, how often do you let someone else’s choices determine yours? Perhaps you’d like Italian for dinner, but you think your partner would prefer Mexican – so you suggest that instead. Maybe you really want a quiet night in, but you end up going out because you think it’ll keep your friends happy.

Some people don’t even feel that they have any preference: they’re so used to letting others make decisions for them. I used to feel like this and a tip that worked brilliantly for me was to simply pretend that I liked one option over another. Simply making your own choice, and holding out for it, helps you get back in touch with what you want. [read]

What’s Old Is New: A Vintage Recording Gear Tour De Force

A look at the development and evolution of recording preamps, compressors and equalizers, with a healthy dose of console talk as well. Back stories and perspective, plus some subjective performance and application commentary.

In the early days of our industry, equipment was made to serve the user’s needs. Many of the original studio owners came from a radio background. They built their own equipment, from consoles to compressors to equalizers, etc.

They didn’t have cost-effective manufacturing in mind when they created this equipment. They built it in order to make superior-sounding recordings.

At some point, other people in the audio community asked these pioneers to build equipment for their studios. The world of professional recording equipment manufacturing was born.

While much of the original research and development was carried out by Bell Labs, many of the early studio owners took these designs to the next level for their own purposes.

For many working in recording today, vintage equipment helps them to realize their goals. But the term “vintage” is seriously overused – it applies very well to wine and guitars, but not so well to pro audio hardware. [read]

Maybe you have to be a guitar player to appreciate it, but the new AC/DC box set just may be the coolest one ever released.

Not only does the $200 box set come with musical rarities and memorabilia, but it’s packed inside a fully functional 1-watt guitar amplifier.

Inside the working amplifier comes three CDs, two DVDs, one vinyl LP, a 164-page hardcover book and memorabilia from the band’s earliest days of touring including a button, sticker, tour flier, track sheet, temporary tattoo, guitar pick, three lithographs, a poster and a replica of one of the fake $100 bills used to shower audiences during the ‘91 Moneytalks tour. The package is now available from the AC/DC Backtracks website.

The Backtracks CDs includes six never-before-released tracks, plus two discs of “live rarities” spanning from 1977’s Sydney Arts Festival to a 2000 show in Phoenix.

According to documents procured by the folks at Fone Frenzy, T-Mobile’s incredibly appealing Project Dark pricing plans begin today. Long story short, those leaked plans we brought you earlier this week are completely, totally true. Also, Catherine Zeta-Jones: Updated.

The new T-Mobile Unlimited plans match Sprint’s all-you-can eat $99 deal with its unlimited $99 voice/text/voice plan (as seen in the image, with discounted handsets). Update: The $79 price point comes into play with regular priced handsets, two-year agreements, as seen in T-Mobile’s marketing materials:

It’s just that [read]

Guide to Comma Use: 9 Ways

If all the punctuation marks got together for a party, the party wouldn’t come alive until the comma arrived. The comma is such a versatile little animal. Often abused, under-used and over-used, the comma can be a readers best friend, but a writer’s worst enemy.

Whilst the full stop is the red light to a sentence, the comma has the ability to keep the green light on a sentence for a long time. With its versatility it can keep complex sentences coherent, it can add additional information, add afterthoughts, and enlarge upon thoughts.

I bet you didn’t think a little curl of a pen mark could evoke such passion.

I have been fascinated with the comma ever since an English teacher told me, ‘The best way to use a comma is to think of it as a way of pausing before moving on to the next part of the sentence.’, whilst this is a myth it is a good way to get started thinking about commas. However, there are so many other ways it can be used. [read]

Best Movie Lines

Coming up with the BEST movies lines ever is pretty tough.  There are so many, but not many are iconic.  Here are a few  starting off with my favorite.

GOLDFINGER

James Bond: “Do you expect me to talk, Goldfinger?”
Auric Goldfinger: “No, Mr. Bond….I expect you to die.”

Others, in no particular order:

“You don’t understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I could’ve been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am. (On The Waterfront)

“What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate” (Cool Hand Luck)

“I love the smell of napalm in the morning” (Apocalypse Now)

“Fasten your seatbelts. It going to be a bumpy night” (All About Eve)

“Cinderella story. Outta nowhere. A former greenskeeper, now, about to become the Masters champion. It looks like a mirac…It’s in the hole! It’s in the hole! It’s in the hole!” (Caddy Shack)
