Put Away the Darn Camera : How to politely photograph food

chow.com — There is etiquette around food photography? Goodness – I bought it, I can take pictures of it. “It can be tiresome when you’re dining out with a friend who insists on photographing every course before you can dig in. Maybe looking like a tourist makes you cringe. Or maybe deep down, you feel it’s narcissistic for…”

When so many drivers have turned into the rudest people on earth, now there is some worried about the etiquette of food photography? [read]

The Damage of Showing Up Late – Even a Little…

I met a producer the other day who is really frustrated. He doesn’t perform well at meetings, he continually gets turned down for jobs, and his career is suffering. I met with him because I knew him to be talented, has great energy, and good people skills. I was baffled at what his problem might be until he showed up for our meeting….late.
For some reason, I couldn’t get his being late off my mind so I started to probe. I found out that being late for things is pretty much a constant in his life. He won’t admit it of course, but I started to ask around, and sure enough – others had the same experience as me. [read]

News? Media Priorities

Yesterday, while listening to the radio, I heard someone talking about something that I have been thinking about a lot lately.  Not an original thought by any means but in hearing from another person I realized that I wasn’t the only one noticing.  Newspapers and Network News have been steadily losing viewership, mainly due to the fact that they don’t report news any more.  The have been editorializing, at best but lately it’s gone even deeper, in a worse way.  Now it’s all about “celeb”.

In the past few weeks the headlines and ‘breaking news’ has been more about whether Jon and Kate will divorce or whether Rihanna will testify against Chris Brown. Much less attention has been paid the Iranian Election Crises or the fact that North Korea is threatening to fire a missle at Hawaii on the Fourth of July.

TMZ, Insider and other gossip agencies are becoming the leading force in providing “news”.  Perez Hilton is getting more airtime than Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Before the breaking story of Perez and the Miss America controversy I don’t people even realized that the Miss American contest was even around.

Jon, Kate, Perez, Lambert, TMZ, “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here” and the rest of you – why are you more important than the Iranian woman protestor that was so severly beaten that she died on camera for the world to watch?  In reality, it’s our fault.  We tune in, we buy the rags, we support the advertisers.  We stopped reading horrible papers like the L.A. Times, now turn off Jon and Kate.  “But who wants to hear more BAD news?” We just want to escape. You do that.  Hopefully, if that missle gets off the ground no human being with be at the other end of it.

If You've Ever Worked for a Client – This is For You

For designers, freelancers or studio owners, we have ALL found ourselves in this situation.  Here’s a very funny video how ‘our clients’ would come across in every day life.  Trouble is, how do we get out clients to watch it before they open up their mouths?

A throw out to Phil Cooke who turned me on to this video.

Steve Jobs recovering from liver transplant surgery

The WSJ has reported that Steve Jobs underwent liver transplant surgery a few months back and is on schedule in his recovery. Apple is apparently mum on if true or not, but Leo got a cryptic corroborating email back then that Jobs had just checked out of a hospital in Memphis. It could be that Steve’s desire for privacy motivated his handling it back east. But details are sketchy.

On the road to mediocrity

Along the way, we settle.

We settle for something not quite right, or an outfit that isn’t our best look, or a job that doesn’t quite maximize our talents. We settle for relationships that don’t give us joy, or a website that’s, “good enough.”

The only way to get mediocre is one step at a time.

You don’t have to settle. It’s a choice you get to make every day.
